Blurring Memory and Myth, the Natural and the Uncanny
Through layered, atmospheric painting, Kellie Mattatall explores themes of memory, place, and emotional residue. Her work often evokes abandoned homes, weathered landscapes, and dreamlike fragments—spaces where history lingers like a ghost. With a palette drawn from the natural world and a sensibility attuned to the poetic and the uncanny, her paintings become portals: not just into physical locations, but into the layered inner worlds shaped by loss, transformation, and quiet reverence. These are not passive scenes, but active meditations—gestures of remembering, reframing, and revealing what endures beneath surface decay.

This House Just Ain’t a Home
Deconstructed Houses
These works grew from my fascination with the way memory and place erode one another. The houses I paint and photograph are not whole — they’re fragments, outlines, or ghosts of structures that once held lives. In time, the walls thin, the roof folds, the colours fade — yet something lingers, something both personal and collective.
For me, these deconstructed houses are less about architecture and more about the emotional scaffolding we build around memory. They are reminders of how place shapes us, how we leave traces behind even as the landscape reclaims what was once ours. Each piece is a kind of remembering — a way to hold onto what resists being held.
